CHARLIE BROWN

Posted by JW

IT IS HAPPENING AT LISA AND JOHN’S GARDEN

Tuesday Liza heard Charlie Brown barking and opened the door to see a gray fox within inches of him. She scooped him up by his harness and called the Town officials. We also called the New Hampshire Fish and Game. We could tell that the fox was rabid because he was acting very strange and would not leave the yard. Two hours later, it was shot and we got the results that it is rabid. We had to take our dogs in for booster shots, and Charlie Brown was quarantine at our house for 10 days. Very scary. Very lucky Liza did not have any open wounds on her hands and Charlie Brown did not get bitten. Otherwise she would have had to have rabies treatment, and Charlie Brown would have been quarantine longer.

Wednesday several Eastern Bluebird’s at the feeders.  Every winter a flock of Bluebird’s returns to our feeders.  We have had them for several winters, about breeding time they go and we don’t see any except for an occasional visit by 2 or some times 3  until winter. They do feed at the seed feeders some, but mostly like our peanut-butter mix, orange flavored suet, and meal worms.

Also saw the Carolina Wren again this week. So I guess they are back for the winter. Purple Finch regular visitor, first time we have had several for a long time period.  Hopefully they are here for the winter.  Dark-eyed Junco’s have shown up saying its winter.  A few different Sparrows stopping by, Chipping Sparrow, White Throated Sparrow, and others.  Those that stay we will ID.  Hard to tell the difference when they come in groups and don’t stay  long. Have seen some Brown-headed Cow Birds and lots of other Black Birds.  Grackles and Red-wing Black Birds are migrating and only stop for a day or so to refuel. House Finch coming on a regular basis.

  3. Hi lovely people,

Foxes have been sighted here on our street, but no one was ever attacked. Some people found some dens near their properties in my neighbourhood. Maybe, because the area used to be undeveloped land and we are very close to a Conservation area with abundoned wild life, edging on to Lake Ontario. I am glad, Liza did not have to endure the ‘rabies’ shots. Charlie Brown was very lucky too.

HI Christa: Yes they are both very lucky. Lots of foxes in the area, this is the first time that we know of a rabid one.

    Have a great evening,
    John
