COLD AND SNOW

FEATHERED FRIENDS PROVIDE THE SHOW

TRANQUIL TO WATCH

*

While our gardens are asleep and sometimes covered in snow winter birds are the show.  Blizzard of 2013 has come and gone.  Another storm is on its way.  Birds are feeding from dawn to dusk.  Not much feeder activity today will see what early am brings tomorrow.   So far this winter not much activity with Northern Cardinals and Carolina Wrens.  Other birds have been very active including Starlings.  Usually only one or two Starlings here thru the winter this year about 15.  Have not seen much of the Red-bellied Woodpeckers this winter, usually quite popular. As the weather warms the bird activity increases along with the plant activity.

  3. Hi John and Liza,
Got a quick question: in slide #11 is that a chickadee or a white-breasted nuthatch? The mask over the eyes doesn’t fit the former, but does the latter. Just wondering!

I saw a red-winged blackbird at our feeder a few days back. Unusual for around here, but probably not so down your way. The snow today brought out the goldfinches in larger numbers than usual. Tomorrow I need to get out there and refill all the feeders. Finally found some suet to put out so know the woodpeckers will be happy! Thanks for the lovely pictures!

  6. I’m jealous that you guys have bluebirds during the winter! I’m envious of your entire “bird feeding station”! I wish I would take the time to do it up like you guys do! But, alas … I do not .. so I can just live fantasy vicariously thru you!! ;)

HI Christina: Bluebirds like Meal worms, live and dried. I feed dried sometimes berry flavored.

    Have a great day,

Hi Heidi: Thanks for stopping by. Bluebirds, Bluejays, and Cardinals are our most colorful winter birds. As spring approaches the Gold finches are brightening up and soon the summer birds will be arriving.

    Have a wonderful day,
    John
