MOZART RETURNS
IT WAS A LONG NIGHT
This morning about 12:01 AM Mozart asked to go out. Not unusual as he had not gone out earlier for his nightly walk. Penny and Charlie went with him and when they returned Mozart was not far behind. He was staking out his last claim as usual and follows in a few minutes. After several minutes I realized the he was not asking to come in. No barking at the door. Grabbed a flash light and went to see what he was up to, NO MOZART IN SIGHT.
Should not be a problem he has his Electric Fence Collar on and he never goes past the flags. Got my boots on and Liza came to help. A quick look around the yard came up with no Mozart. We searched all around. Liza Drove around the neighborhood, I walked up our street and around what we call Rocky Mountain. Found Dog tracks in several places but they could also have been Fox tracks. No sign of Mozart. Finally about 3:30 AM we gave it up and came in. Liza made some posters too put up in the morning and we tried to get a couple hours sleep.
By the way is not uncommon for Mozart to take trips like this but he has not done it for a long time. His history goes back the first week we had him and has been gone for several days a few times. Each time we put up posters around where he went missing from and got him back each time.
The Latest Poster
Liza was up first this morning about 6:00 AM She went out looking for him While I was getting ready Just got my boots on and the other dogs where barking. Liza asked if the other dogs had barked and I told her yes. She said she thought she had heard Mozart bark. As we were standing outside we heard him bark. Looked towards the sound and there he was standing on the other side if the electric fence. We had turned the fence off during the night so he could come back if he tried. Looked like he came from a large brush pile in our back yard. Went to get him as he would not pass the fence flags. He was so glad to see us.
Picked him up and carried to the house. Leaves were frozen to his fur so assumed he had hunkered down in the brush pile or under something else for the night.
Here he is sound asleep like nothing happened. Except I can not go anywhere without him following. I wonder if he knows how lucky he is to have us to look out for him and rescue him each time he disappears. Mozart is now almost totally Blind and is getting hard of hearing so we have to watch him a lot closer. Last Night I am sure he just got confused and must have gotten shocked when he went through the fence. It seems he just decided to lay low for the night and when light came he headed home.

OMG!! How frightening! Our Geordie was blind and dear near his end time. I worried so much that just such a thing would happen to him. We had regular fencing, but I still stood at the door with a flash light on him. He didn’t have other fur buddies to help him get back in.
I’m so thankful you found him/he found you.
Whew!!!

So glad you revealed the happy end in the title or I´d have been too worried all the way through the post. Here´s hoping he won´t do it again.

Hey Dad,
I had a similiar story with Tango one year … although I was lucky, it was not wintertime. She’s always close to home, and never wanders far from the back yard. A lot of times, she just hangs out on the deck until I get home. Well, one Friday morning I let her out, just like I always do, before I go to work. When I got home that night, she was not immediately there, unusual for her, but not a given. So, I did my thing and checked the door every once in a while to see if she showed up. Nope, no Tango .. so before I went to bed, checked one more time … nope, no Tango. Now I’m starting to worry … I hope she’ll show up crying to come in at 2am … nope, no Tango!! Oh boy, I thought she was a gonner for sure! Saturday came and went, no Tango. Sunday came and went, no Tango … I had pretty much figured her time was up, my Tango was gone for good. UNTIL, Monday morning at 6am…. THERE SHE WAS!! What a relief! … and she will be 16 years old in January! Not as spry as she used to be, but still the Queen!

Mozart says thank you to you all for comments and I won’t do it again until the next time. I have been called the wandering dog a few times in the past and have been good since they put in the Invisible fence. Except a couple of times when we where at other places. My best adventure was the time I spent a week in Rowley, MA. at below 0 temp. and ended up getting a free Chinese Food Dinner.
Thanks for caring about me,
Mozart

Good Morning Joyce: Having furry Friends is great, they return the love unconditionally. Sometimes I wish Mozart could talk or write about his travels. Am sure it would make for some interesting stories. Like the time he bit the neighbor who rescued him from a swamp and the police officer that tried to catch him one night.
Have a wonderful day,
John

Oh, what a rough night you have had, and your little Mozart, too. I’m so glad you’ve found him and that he had the sense to come back to the right spot, blind or not, when the day came again. He’s so cute in his pictures!
Glad your whole family is home safe for the new year! Have a happy one

I just discovered your blog and read this post, so I know I am late in commenting. But I had to say how beautiful Mozart is – I can imagine how worried and heartsick you felt. We too have had that experience. I am so glad all turned out well for you and Mozart.

i have an 11 yr.old pupper with a bad heart.
he is beagle-shitzu cross, which means he is sweet,
with an attitude. he looks so much like mozart! his
beagle nose takes him off into the fields for hours,
sometimes overnight, and i am in constant worry on
these xtreme cold nights. he is too old for hunting,
but he loves it so.. i dont have the heart to keep him in.
i also have a deaf, half blind aussie shepherd who is 13..
she stays right with me, always. sometimes i have to use
very exaggerated hand signals…living with geriatric dogs is worrisome at times, but worth every day!
so glad mozart is safe!
best blessings for the new year,
vty, joanne

HI Joanne, I just new you where a dog lover also. Mozart is not a hunter just a wanderer, we have not figured out yet what he is looking for. Must be the lady dogs, but mozart can’t do any thing. Mozart say’s thanks for liking him and hello to the old pupper and the aussie.
Have a Great Evening,
John
