THE BIRDS ARE SAYING IT IS REALLY SPRING, WE HAVE ARRIVED

*

Not only the birds are saying it’s spring the daffodils are up under the snow in several places and I expect the Hellebore’s are also blooming under the snow.   Birds have started their spring mating songs.  In place of our winter flock of about 10 starlings we now have close to 400 blackbirds.  Starlings, Grackles, Red-wing  blackbird’s, and others. 

Carolina wren is a familiar bird at the feeders now. Their song calling each other is constant all day.  Our resident Robin is at the feeders daily surviving on seeds.   Haven’t seen  the White-throated sparrow for a few days, but I am sure it is utilizing the feeders.   The next week or so  warmer weather will be melting the snow.  As this happens the birds will change their habits and a lot of the blackbirds will move on to summer habitats. 

Have not seen much deer activity with the latest storm. Expect the snow is getting too deep for them to travel far. We know they bed down a ways from here.  As the snow melts and the shrubs and other things start to bud out the deer will show up.  The male American goldfinches are brightening up their yellow.  They House finches are showing more red color.

INTERESTING WEEK AT THE BIRD FEEDERS

This past week we had some new birds at the feeders.  We have seen a Robin around this winter but never at the feeders.  The other day during the snow storm there he was feeding on seed mix.  Also had a White-Throated Sparrow and Red Breasted Nuthatch.  Thought we saw a Red Breasted Nuthatch earlier this winter but not sure, there it was as on the feeders during and after the snow storm.  As for the sparrow we do not have many sparrows this was the first time for a White-Throated.

Of course during all this the regular visitors to the feeders are there.  Chickadee,  Tufted Titmouse,  American Goldfinch,  White-Breasted Nuthatch,  Junco,  Eastern Bluebird,  Bluejay,  Northern Cardinal,  Pine Siskin,  and Sparrows.  are all feeding at the feeders. Oh ya and the Starlings.

COLD AND SNOW

FEATHERED FRIENDS PROVIDE THE SHOW

TRANQUIL TO WATCH

*

While our gardens are asleep and sometimes covered in snow winter birds are the show.  Blizzard of 2013 has come and gone.  Another storm is on its way.  Birds are feeding from dawn to dusk.  Not much feeder activity today will see what early am brings tomorrow.   So far this winter not much activity with Northern Cardinals and Carolina Wrens.  Other birds have been very active including Starlings.  Usually only one or two Starlings here thru the winter this year about 15.  Have not seen much of the Red-bellied Woodpeckers this winter, usually quite popular. As the weather warms the bird activity increases along with the plant activity.

COLD WEATHER BRINGS OUT ALL THE BIRDS

*

Its winter again Birds are feeding heavily.  The heated water bath is a popular location,  Bluebirds use it a lot.  One of our cameras is being repaired.  The one I am using is not as easy to get good bird shots.  Camera should be back next week.
