MORE BLOSSOMS EVERY DAY

2 X 4 is 10 ft. long, Sunflower pushing 14 ft.

“BIG SMILE” now has about 25 blossoms and is still growing taller. I have some stakes supporting it but now the stakes are bending from the weight. Week end project to support it some more. The 2 x 4 in the photo is a 10 footer so figure 3 to 4 feet above that. Keep getting asked what are we feeding that plant. The answer is lots of compost and organic matter in the soil there, we are not feeding any fertilizer of any kind. This Garden constructed by the Lasagna Gardening Method. Started in the fall of 2008 A Garden is Born. Most of our gardens built this way and we do not use a lot of fertilizer on any kind.

REACHING FOR HEAVEN

American Goldfinch are steady feeding at the sunflowers. The other day a flock of about 10 visited us. Chickadee and Woodpeckers starting to show up also. As time goes on I am sure we will see lots of other birds at the Sunflower’s.

Red Squirrel dinning on fresh seeds. It gleaned that one clean. Some of the seed heads have fallen to the ground and get devoured almost immediately.

Hummingbirds are very active now. Lots of young playful ones. They are coming steady all day and into the evening. Soon they will be departing for the winter.

The Garden has a feeling of summer ending and fall settling in. Lots of mood changes going on. This post has a feeling of ending so thanks for stopping by. See you next time.

SUNFLOWER (Bird Food = Chipmunk)

In the past we have planted a few sunflowers and allowed them to mature as Bird food. We have always had a few come from seed planted by the birds or chipmunks mostly in the lawn or around the feeders. Last year we had a good crop along the back side of one garden. This year we did not plant any, we now have a bumper crop and the are coming up all over the yard.

Some are from seed dropped by the birds, others self seeded around a plant that we allowed to mature last year and then the ones planted by Chipmunks. Chipmunks like to take a mouth full of bird seed and then bury it. Doesn’t matter what the seeds are they don’t care just bury them for storage and then forget them.

Just to let you know, doing fine up and around, driving and doing light duty in the garden. Cooler Weather will allow more outside activities like lounging in the garden rather than on the couch.

CONFUSION

To clear up the confusion about the last post. System posted a blank post and sent Email notices. Post removed and replaced by this post

Its been over two weeks now since I almost started pushing daisy’s. Hot and no rain for close to three weeks. So my take it easy leisure garden activities are to move the Noodle Head water’s several time a day. Other than that is stay inside out of the hot sun and enjoy the cool of the air conditioners.

As we look around the gardens we are seeing a lot of good growth this year. Most plants are exceptionally taller, think this is due to the warm spring and to the soil conditions we have created in the gardens. Lots of compost a little organic fertilizer here and there, no chemicals. Weeds are having a good year also.

Saturday the 10th of July, finally getting some rain about 1/2” so far with showers and thunderstorms predicted threw tomorrow. Temperature has dropped to about 80 Deg. F making it very comfortable.

Lots of Butterfly’s here this year. Liza is trying to photograph them no real cooperation yet. We have however located some Monarch Butterfly Caterpillars and got some good photos. Lots more flowers in bloom photos included this post.

FLOWERS BLOOMING

WHAT FLOWERS BLOOMED THIS SPRING

It’s now the end of June, we have had warm weather this spring. The gardens are doing real good. As we wonder around the yard we see the gardens developing very well. A lot of plants are exceptionally tall this year due to the warm spring.

Lots of new blossoms in the garden in the past week. So I guess my next Gardening Project is to take a few photos and prepare another post.
